ABOUT THE ROLE Join the City of Wichita in a leadership role at the forefront of infrastructure management. This position leverages technical expertise and strategic vision to ensure the integrity of the city's stormwater and flood control systems. You will lead and inspire teams dedicated to maintaining and improving essential infrastructure such as levees, stormsewer pipe networks, inlet structures, and stormwater pump stations, collaborating with engineers, consultants, contractors, and city staff to ensure optimal performance and long-term sustainability. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Assists the Stormwater Engineer with the preparation of annual renewal and replacement plans. - Assists with the development of plans and management of capital projects. - Plans and supervises the work of technical and non-technical employees. - Assists with project feasibility studies and recommends action to leadership. - Assists with negotiations related to consultant contracts and monitors contract performance. - Assists with planning, development, coordination, and scheduling of project work and related financial tasks. - Confers with consultants, field engineers, contractors, utility companies, and suppliers. - Evaluates work completed by consultants and staff for quality control and adherence to City standards. - Ensures conformity with plans, specifications, standards, and policies. - Develops cost estimates of work programs. - Keeps records and prepares technical reports of work activities. - Operates a vehicle to complete work assignments. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Graduation from a four-year college with a degree in engineering, science, construction management, or public administration. - Three years of progressively responsible experience performing engineering or science duties (e.g., designing, inspecting, or maintaining stormwater systems; analyzing environmental data; preparing technical reports; ensuring regulatory compliance; or overseeing infrastructure projects). - One year of experience supervising staff in the performance of engineering or science duties. - Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Must acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license. - Physical demands include the ability to lean and reach to read large building plans, work outdoors in inclement weather, tolerate airborne environmental nuisances, and traverse uneven, unstable, or slippery terrain. - Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of others in the workplace. - Preferred qualifications include an ABET-accredited bachelor's degree in civil, environmental, or stormwater engineering, registration as a Professional Engineer in Kansas, Certified Floodplain Manager designation, and one year of experience in project planning, cost estimation, and contract management.
