ABOUT THE ROLE Under the general direction of the Chief Probation Officer (CPO), this role demonstrates high-level leadership, professionalism, and autonomy to organize, plan, and manage the day-to-day activities of the San Francisco Adult Probation Department (SFAPD). The department values diversity, invests in client success through reentry and rehabilitative services, and enhances public safety, victim restoration, and evidence-based supervision on behalf of the Superior Court of San Francisco. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Formulate strategic plans for client rehabilitation and ensure staff safety. - Collaborate with various agencies, law enforcement, stakeholders, and community groups. - Analyze staffing and performance data to forecast and recommend operational equity and efficiency. - Develop and train staff, assist the CPO in key division operations, and assist in annual budget preparation. - Prioritize staff wellness, professional development, engagement, and employee recognition. - Ensure grievance and discipline practices align with Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs). - Represent the Department before commissions, boards, committees, and media. - Work non-traditional hours, including evenings and weekends, in the office or field, and may be required to be armed. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Baccalaureate Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Criminology, Corrections, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, or a closely related field (e.g., Juris Doctorate). - Five (5) years of full-time supervisory experience in field services, institutional work, or related special programs in a California County Probation Department, California Corrections Facility, government agency, or an equivalent combination. - A Master's Degree in a related field or a JD may be substituted for one year of the required general supervisory experience. - Meet all minimum standards for Peace Officer under Section 1031 of the Government Code: 1. Be a US citizen or a permanent resident eligible for and applied for citizenship. 2. Be at least 18 years of age. 3. Be fingerprinted for local, state, and national criminal record checks. 4. Be of good moral character, determined by a thorough background investigation. 5. Be a high school graduate, pass an approved equivalency test, or hold a college degree. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Completion of any state-mandated trainings to meet sworn officer requirements within one year after the hire date. - Must pass a POST law enforcement background investigation. - A psychological examination (written tests and clinical interview) is required prior to appointment. - Conviction of a felony, or a crime that would have been a felony in California, is a bar to employment.
