ABOUT THE ROLE The San Francisco Adult Probation Department (SFAPD) seeks a Criminal Justice Specialist II to carry out complex research activities, analytical studies, and program administration related to the criminal justice system. This role focuses on pretrial services, reentry initiatives, and violence prevention. Incumbents work with considerable independence, may act as consultants to outside agencies, and may supervise subordinate staff to support public safety and successful reentry. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Court Liaison: Provide real-time communication and case support between Pretrial Services, courts, jails, and law enforcement. Attend arraignments and gather data in detention facilities. - Court Appearance Monitoring: Supervise client participation in court appearances, monitor behavior, and communicate updates to pretrial officers and judicial partners. - Case Management Monitoring: Oversee case management activities for individuals on pretrial release, guide case managers, and ensure coordinated delivery of services and referrals. - Citywide Violence Response: Design, coordinate, and evaluate strategies to promote community safety and reduce violence, serving as a subject-matter lead in violence prevention and intervention. - Reentry: Coordinate and deliver reentry services to individuals transitioning from custody to the community, assessing needs and developing individualized service plans. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Education: Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in a social or behavioral science, preferably sociology or criminology. - Experience: Two (2) years of experience in analytical research and studies in social or behavioral science in a public defender's office, community-based organization, or non-profit agency. This must include program administration, case management, data collection and analysis, and report writing. - Substitution: Additional qualifying work experience may substitute for up to two years of required education on a year-for-year basis (one year or 2000 hours equals 30 semester or 45 quarter units). SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Knowledge of modern research methods, criminal justice systems, pretrial justice practices, reentry frameworks, and violence reduction strategies. - Ability to establish effective working relationships, communicate in court and public settings, and prepare clear reports and memoranda. - Must be available to work various shifts: 7am-4pm, 3pm-11pm, or On-Call 11pm-7am. - May require frequent entry into detention facilities to gather data, verify custody status, and resolve discrepancies.
