About This Position

ABOUT THE ROLE The State of Alaska Department of Education and Early Development, Division of Innovation and Education Excellence, is recruiting for a Long-Term Non-Permanent Education Specialist 2. This flexible/hybrid position is open to Alaska residents only and involves working with school and district personnel statewide, prioritizing rural districts with limited behavioral health support capacity. The role addresses behavioral health challenges, provides professional training on best practices, and supports the mental, emotional, and physical health of students and educators through proactive and crisis response efforts. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Work with school and district personnel across the state via email, telephone, and teleconferencing - Prioritize support to rural districts lacking local school behavioral health support capacity - Address response and recovery related behavioral health challenges - Provide statewide, regional, and local professional training on school counseling and behavioral health best practices - Deliver on-site and distance professional development on Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports, trauma-engaged practices, social emotional learning, and self-care - Speak in front of large groups and articulate policy and procedure nuances to diverse stakeholders - Provide continuous support for health and safety needs in schools, including crisis response - Travel within the state as required to support schools and districts MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Bachelor's degree from an accredited college - Four years of professional experience in education, including one year as a staff advisor, specialist, administrator, supervisor, or consultant in planning, developing, and maintaining standards and evaluating educational or vocational curricula or programs in a specialized field - Substitution: Appropriate graduate study may substitute on a year-for-year basis for non-specialized experience, up to a maximum of two years SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Must be an Alaska Resident - Must possess a valid driver's license - Requires a Type C Alaska Teaching Certificate in School Counseling or Social Work, or a regular Alaska Teaching Certificate with an endorsement in Counseling (must be obtained and maintained as a condition of employment) - Must submit a cover letter (2 to 3 paragraphs, maximum 1 page) describing position-specific competencies - Must provide transcripts at the time of interview (unofficial is acceptable if institution or URL is listed) - Must provide three professional references with contact information at the time of interview - Foreign education credentials must be evaluated by a specialized private organization to prove equivalence to U.S. education - The State of Alaska does not provide VISA employer sponsorships SELECTION PROCESS - Applications will be reviewed to determine if minimum qualifications are met based on documented work experience and education within the application itself (resumes are not used to determine minimum qualifications) - Qualified candidates will advance to the interview phase, where transcripts, teaching certificates, and professional references will be required - Flexibly staffed position experience must clearly indicate actual dates employed at each level to be considered for minimum qualifications HOW TO APPLY - Apply ONLY through the Workplace Alaska website or via a hard copy application - Include the required cover letter addressing position-specific competencies - Ensure all education and work experience details are fully documented in the application form - Closing Date: September 16, 2026, at 5:00 PM Alaska EMPLOYMENT DETAILS - Employer: State of Alaska - Department: Education and Early Development - Division: Innovation and Education Excellence (IEE-SCHOOL HEALTH and PROF DEVELOPMENT) - Job Type: Long Term Nonperm - Job Number: 54867 - Range: 21 - Bargaining Unit: General Government - Location: Statewide, AK (Flexible/Hybrid, with offices in Juneau or Anchorage) - Opening Date: August 26, 2026
