About This Position
ABOUT THE ROLE
The City and County of Denver is seeking a Central Utility Plant (CUP) Superintendent for Denver International Airport (DEN). This role manages the day-to-day operations of the central utility plant to ensure the efficient and reliable functioning of critical systems. DEN is the 4th busiest airport in the U.S. and the 10th busiest globally. The position involves managing supervisors and building engineers, ensuring regulatory compliance, and maintaining strict safety protocols.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage Central Utility Plant Supervisors and Building Engineers
- Perform skilled, high-level maintenance on Central Utility Plants, Pre-conditioned Air Plants, Primary Pump Rooms, and Heating, Chill, and Condenser systems
- Develop, mentor, coach, and monitor work teams, determining priorities and assigning staff to accomplish division goals
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and environmental requirements; implement safety protocols and conduct emergency drills
- Forecast expenses related to construction, preventive maintenance, and repair initiatives
- Assist in developing and managing budgets for operational expenses, maintenance, and capital projects
- Disseminate information regarding planned shutdowns, maintenance activities, and shift coverage
- Direct the development of performance evaluation standards within leadership guidelines
- Provide training opportunities and resources to enhance staff skills and knowledge
- Establish and maintain preventive maintenance and repair programs for City-owned facilities and equipment
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. Education: Graduation from high school or possession of a GED, HiSET, or TASC Certificate.
2. Experience: Four (4) years of experience supervising skilled trades work in the maintenance, repair, and construction of buildings and facilities.
3. Equivalency: A combination of appropriate education and experience may be substituted for the minimum requirements.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Valid Driver's License required at the time of application.
- Must have valid work authorization that does not require sponsorship of a visa for employment in the U.S.
- Preferred: Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
- Preferred: Five or more years of leadership experience supervising skilled trades in a Central Utility Plant environment.
- Preferred: Five or more years of hands-on experience in operations and maintenance within a CUP setting (chiller plants, boiler plants, primary pump rooms, hydronic systems).
- Preferred: Previous experience in an aviation environment and/or working knowledge of FAA regulations.
- Preferred Licensures/Certifications (at application or within 6 months of hire): City and County of Denver Refrigeration Supervisor A, Stationary Engineer certificate, and CFC (Universal EPA License).

- Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
