Cement Finisher - Department of Transportation

ABOUT THE ROLE The City of Baltimore Department of Transportation is seeking a Cement Finisher to mix, pour, and finish concrete for a variety of construction and maintenance projects. This role involves no supervisory duties but requires working under moderate supervision from a technical superior. The work is performed outdoors in inclement weather, construction sites, and traffic, and requires strenuous physical activity including lifting heavy objects, bending, stooping, crawling, and stretching. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Mix, pour, and finish concrete for construction and maintenance projects - Operate a pneumatic drill and a concrete saw - Assign and review the work of laborers - Apply knowledge of tools, equipment, materials, and techniques used in cement finishing - Utilize knowledge of concrete characteristics and chemical additives used to speed or slow setting times - Follow general construction procedures and safety precautions MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 1. Two years of experience performing cement finishing work. 2. OR completion of one year of required coursework in a cement finishing or related curriculum in an accredited high school or vocational school (this may be substituted for one year of the experience requirement). SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Must possess a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license, or an equivalent acceptable out-of-state driver's license. Provisional driver's licenses are NOT accepted. - Must upload a copy of a valid driver's license with the application at the time of applying. - Possession of a City driver's license may be required within one year of employment. - Education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Credentials obtained outside the US must be evaluated for US equivalency (information available at www.naces.org). - All selected persons, including current City employees, must complete a mandatory six-month probation. - Eligible candidates under final consideration for positions of trust must complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or fingerprinting.
