About This Position
ABOUT THE ROLE
This position assists the Clarke County Probate Court Judges in providing advisory, transactional, and litigation-related legal services, docket and case management, and acting as a liaison to other county agencies and parties in pending litigation.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Reviews civil filings to determine appropriate courses of action.
- Calendars matters by preparing scheduling orders, hearings, case status calendars, and trials.
- Hosts WebEx meetings to provide remote courtroom access for attendees.
- Refers appropriate civil cases to the Tenth District Office of Dispute Resolution for mediation.
- Prepares cases for hearings and trials, reviews petitions and motions, researches legal issues, and drafts briefs, memoranda, and orders.
- Reviews proposed orders and settlement agreements; electronically files notices and serves relevant parties.
- Provides legal research and counsel to judges, including rendering oral opinions and advising on government policies.
- Maintains and updates the probate court website.
- Serves as a liaison between Judges, other courts, county departments, law enforcement, state agencies, attorneys, and the public.
- Provides supervisory oversight, handles employee concerns, directs work assignments, and supervises law student externs.
- Negotiates settlements and consent orders in cases.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Attorney Pending Bar Results: Juris Doctorate required. Valid driver's license. Experience as a law clerk, law assistant, or paralegal preferred.
- Associate Attorney I: Juris Doctorate with at least 2 years of experience as a practicing attorney in two practice areas. Must be a member of the State Bar of Georgia and comply with CLE requirements. Valid driver's license. Supervisory experience preferred.
- Associate Attorney II: Juris Doctorate with at least 4 years of experience as a practicing attorney in three practice areas. Must be a member of the State Bar of Georgia and comply with CLE requirements. Valid driver's license. Supervisory experience preferred.
- Senior Attorney: Juris Doctorate with at least 6 years of experience as a practicing attorney in four practice areas. Must be a member of the State Bar of Georgia and comply with CLE requirements. Valid driver's license. Supervisory experience preferred.
- Note: A minimum of 12 months of experience in a practice area is required to be considered a practice area.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Work schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm (may be required to work on religious holidays).
- Regular and predictable attendance is required.
- Must adhere to the Georgia Rules of Professional Conduct and the Georgia Code of Judicial Conduct.
- Must abide by the safe driving policy when operating a vehicle.
- Physical requirements: Sedentary work level, occasionally exerting up to 10 pounds of force; requires walking, standing, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, seeing, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
SELECTION PROCESS
This is a Non-Personnel System classification that serves at the discretion of the Chief Judge.
