About This Position
ABOUT THE ROLE
This position is located in the Department of Forensic Sciences (DFS) at the Consolidated Forensic Laboratory. The role is responsible for conducting forensic chemistry analytical work, including controlled dangerous substance analysis and surveillance testing. The incumbent analyzes and interprets complex molecular compositions, physical and chemical properties, and chemical reactions, while helping to position DFS as a national leader in technology and laboratory operations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform laboratory analyses of physical evidence and surveillance samples within the forensic chemistry discipline.
- Demonstrate competency and ongoing proficiency in laboratory processing, interpretation, and technical review.
- Participate in and complete externally administrated proficiency tests.
- Ensure methodologies and procedures comply with established standards, quality assurance, and accreditation compliance activities.
- Complete advanced research projects or perform high-level tasks such as training scientists, developing and validating new processes, or overseeing the biosurveillance program.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. Degree: Physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that includes 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by coursework in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
2. Combination of education and experience: Coursework equivalent to a major as described above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
3. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression, equipping the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties successfully.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Background and Drug Testing: Subject to mandatory pre-employment and periodic criminal background checks, traffic records checks, and random drug and alcohol testing. Presence of marijuana in test results may result in disqualification, even with a medical card.
- DNA Swab: Required to submit a buccal swab for the DNA Quality Control database.
- Working Conditions: Exposure to hazardous materials, toxic substances, and blood-borne pathogens. Must follow safe laboratory practices and wear protective clothing (masks, safety glasses, gloves, etc.).
- Emergency Designation: Designated as an emergency employee, requiring reporting to work, staying at work, or teleworking during declared emergencies, and potentially performing duties outside the position description.
- Residency Preference: If claimed, must maintain bona fide District of Columbia residency for seven consecutive years from the effective date of employment, subject to documentation and forfeiture of employment if not maintained.
