About This Position
ABOUT THE ROLE
The San Francisco District Attorney's Office Victim Services Division is seeking a Claims Specialist to join the Victim Compensation Unit. This role focuses on helping crime victims recover from crime-related financial losses by guiding them through the California Victim Compensation Board (CalVCB) application process. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, compassionate, and committed to ensuring victims receive the financial support they are entitled to while evaluating eligibility, verifying financial losses, and assessing reimbursements.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Verify and evaluate information provided by applicants to determine eligibility for program benefits
- Verify and evaluate crime-related losses and applicable reimbursement and recovery sources
- Analyze and respond to inquiries from victims and service providers regarding program eligibility
- Work with a diverse population of clients who may be in crisis
- Communicate effectively with applicants, state board staff, law enforcement, and peers to resolve claims per CalVCB guidelines
- Explain processes and guidelines to applicants regarding the status of pending claims
- Learn, understand, and apply State of California policy and statutory revisions governing claims verification
- Collaborate with the advocacy team and other parties related to pending cases
- Apply knowledge of various reimbursement sources to resolve claims
- Maintain clear and concise notes documenting all contacts, correspondence, and work performed
- Keep supervisor apprised of all activities, including current and anticipated issues
- Work with community stakeholders
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- At least one (1) year of experience in social services, case management, or the insurance industry
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Education in Social Work, Psychology, Criminal Justice, or a closely related field at the bachelor's level or higher is strongly preferred
- Desirable experience includes knowledge of victimology, advocacy, trauma, health or mental-health services, criminal justice system, court processes, and insurance reimbursement procedures
- Bilingual skills, especially in Cantonese, Mandarin, and Spanish, are highly desirable and may be evaluated based on departmental needs
- Must be able to work effectively with members of the public, including individuals in crisis, while maintaining strict confidentiality
SELECTION PROCESS
