About This Position
ABOUT THE ROLE
The City of Boston seeks an Assistant Corporation Counsel to represent the City, its officials, and its departments. The role involves advising City leaders on municipal law matters, representing the City in civil actions and administrative hearings, investigating claims, drafting ordinances, and conducting negotiations. Work is performed on increasingly complex matters with support from Senior Assistant Corporation Counsels and the Law Department Legal Advisor.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manages a caseload and represents the City in state and federal court, administrative proceedings, and other venues.
- Provides representation in matters including personal injury, torts, employment discrimination, civil rights, contract disputes, special education litigation, and appeals.
- Advises the City on policy, procurement, open meeting laws, public records, student confidentiality, and conflict of interest laws.
- Participates in engagement with City departments on complex policy and operational challenges.
- Performs legal research, writes opinions, and drafts or reviews contracts, memoranda, and ordinances.
- Performs specialized municipal law functions such as workers compensation, tax lien foreclosures, public construction, and public education.
- Supports other attorneys and performs related work as directed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Juris Doctor degree.
- At least three years of experience as a lawyer in a law firm or government agency.
- Licensed to practice in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts with no disciplinary record.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Westlaw, and Social Law Library.
- Excellent writing, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Ability to exercise good judgment, focus on detail, and act as a highly motivated self-starter.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Boston residency is required.
