About This Position

ABOUT THE ROLE The City of Chicago Law Department is seeking an attorney for its Torts Division. The role involves an active civil defense litigation and trial practice, focusing on either personal injury defense or medical malpractice defense depending on applicant experience and division needs. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Engage in active civil defense litigation, discovery, and motion practice. - Retain and depose medical and other subject-matter experts. - Participate in hearings and jury trials. - Make case recommendations and participate in settlement negotiations. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Graduation from an American Bar Association accredited law school with a Juris Doctor degree. - Admission to the Illinois Bar, or eligibility for admission on motion pursuant to Illinois Supreme Court Rule 705. - Good standing with the state Attorney Registration & Disciplinary Commission. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Interest or experience in litigation, trial work, and medical damages. - Effective communication, legal research, and writing skills. - Ability to take initiative, manage workflows, meet deadlines, and work well with others. - Must be an actual resident of the City of Chicago (proof of residency required). - Position is exempt from the Career Service. - All references to political sponsorship or recommendation must be omitted from application materials. - Subject to a background check upon conditional offer of employment (Fair Chance Hiring employer).
