About This Position
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Administration for Children's Services (ACS) Division of Youth and Family Justice (DYFJ) is seeking a Tour Commander for the Horizon Juvenile Center in the Bronx. This position is an integral part of an interdisciplinary team responsible for the custody, direct care, supervision, counseling, and accountability of youths in secure and specialized secure detention facilities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assign, supervise, and evaluate the work performed by Associate Youth Development Specialists
- Implement and operationalize the behavior management incentive program
- Review incident reports and notify the Movement Control and Communications Unit of incidents
- Operationalize and coordinate the delivery of services to youth throughout the detention facility
- Review and assist in scheduling and assigning staff to maintain adequate coverage
- Conduct individual and group conferences with staff concerning agency policies, procedures, and Safe Crisis Management techniques
- Prepare and submit reports, tasks, standards, performance evaluations, and process City Time
- Assist the team in formulating youth care plans and review requisitions, records, and reports
- Participate as a member of an interdisciplinary team for youth placement, safety, and delivery of services
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Open only to candidates who are permanent (not provisional) in the Civil Service Title Associate Youth Development Specialist
- High school diploma or equivalent and three years of full-time satisfactory experience working directly with juveniles or young adults (ages 10-24) in a group, community, educational, or institutional setting
- OR Associate degree or 60 college credits and two years and three months of relevant experience
- OR Associate degree or 60 college credits including 12 credits in a related field and one year and nine months of relevant experience
- OR Baccalaureate degree and one year and six months of relevant experience
- OR Baccalaureate degree including 12 credits in a related field and one year of relevant experience
- OR A satisfactory combination of education and experience, including military service or academic coursework substitutions
- All candidates must possess at least a high school diploma and one year of relevant experience
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Staff may be required to drive agency vehicles for youth transportation and act as a court representative or transportation coordinator
- May be assigned to work based on operational needs, including holidays, weekends, evening hours, and mandatory overtime in a 24/7 secure detention facility
- Section 424-A of the NY Social Services Law requires an inquiry into child abuse and maltreatment reports
- Preferred skills include understanding of juvenile detention operations, superior judgment, analytical ability, problem-solving, ability to work under pressure, strong communication skills, and teamwork
