About this role

ABOUT THE ROLE This position is assigned to the Resource service pathway at Madison Middle School. The Special Education Teacher fosters an effective learning environment, establishes and adapts learning objectives based on District and special education guidelines, and provides instruction, counseling, discipline, and supervision to meet the individual needs of assigned students. The role involves evaluating student performance and reporting directly to the building Principal. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Foster an educational environment and plan instructional programs and lesson plans tailored to individual student needs. - Use appropriate instructional methods and materials to implement adapted curriculum objectives and attend in-service training. - Establish classroom policies, provide guidance and discipline, and make referrals for assistance where appropriate. - Confer with students, parents, specialists, and staff to maintain positive relationships and encourage student achievement. - Establish classroom goals, evaluate and record student progress, and prepare reports for parents or guardians. - Direct non-certificated personnel and attend to the physical, emotional, behavioral, medical, or hygienic needs of students. - Collect and interpret data to develop, implement, and evaluate Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). - Attend required staff meetings, serve on committees, and participate in Special Education Compliance Professional Development days. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Education: Bachelor's degree. - Experience: Academic preparation or experience teaching a culturally, racially, and economically diverse student population in an urban school system. - Skills: Experience teaching reading and adapting instructional techniques for special education students. - Knowledge: Understanding of subject areas, effective behavior management, instructional techniques, student safety rules, and special education regulations. - Abilities: Proficiency in reading, writing, and oral communications; ability to design lesson plans for diverse achievement levels and adapt curricula to meet intellectual, social, physical, and emotional needs. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with Special Education Endorsement. - Some positions may require valid first aid and CPR certification. - Some positions may require a valid Washington State driver's license or a class II driver's license.
