About This Position

ABOUT THE ROLE The Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is seeking a Traffic Engineer to lead the planning, design, analysis, and review of various traffic engineering projects. This role applies advanced technical expertise to improve traffic flow, enhance roadway safety, and support data-driven design decisions across the county's transportation network. The ideal candidate is an experienced professional passionate about shaping safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation solutions for the community. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Prepare and review complex traffic engineering plans, including traffic signals, pavement marking, signing, intersection improvements, and low-cost safety projects. - Develop complex project design concepts and criteria, review traffic engineering studies, and recommend countermeasures using engineering judgment. - Supervise and review the work of staff, contractors, and consultants, leading the quality control process in design and review phases. - Compile, interpret, and analyze volume, speed, crash, delay, and queuing data using Synchro and other analytical tools. - Deliver projects aligned with division goals, schedules, and budgets. - Communicate traffic engineering alternatives and mitigation measures to leadership, engineers, contractors, and the public. - Provide technical guidance on traffic engineering issues to staff, departments, consultants, attorneys, regulatory agencies, and the public. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 1. Two years of civil engineering experience. 2. Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field. 3. Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) by the Arizona State Board of Technical Registration, or by another state's technical board with the ability to obtain Arizona registration within six months of employment. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Must currently possess, or have the ability to obtain, a valid Arizona Driver's license by the time of hire. - Must pass a pre-employment background and/or fingerprint investigation as required by statute or policy, including drug and alcohol testing for positions designated as safety-sensitive. - Work requires being in the office, field, or customer-facing environments for all hours worked, with occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds.
