About This Position

ABOUT THE ROLE The Denver City Attorney’s Office is seeking a Senior Assistant City Attorney (Labor Relations) to join the Employment & Labor Law Section. This role provides legal counsel to city officers and employees and representation in the defense of legal cases before administrative agencies and trial and appellate courts. The position involves advising on federal, state, and local workplace laws, traditional labor relations, and potentially mentoring junior attorneys in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Represent the City and County of Denver as the employer in all employment matters - Advise on federal, Colorado, and local workplace laws and other assignments as needed - Represent management in the formation of new collective bargaining units - Provide legal advice regarding union organizing, campaigns, card checks, and neutrality agreements - Handle grievance, arbitration, and unfair labor practice proceedings - Negotiate and provide legal advice regarding collective bargaining agreements - Advise management on wage and hour issues, leave management, disability accommodations, and other workplace issues - Review handbooks, policies, and forms for legal compliance - Conduct management training regarding labor relations, workplace issues, harassment, discrimination, and retaliation - Negotiate and prepare settlement agreements, ordinances, resolutions, and other legal documents - Draft memoranda, motions, briefs, and pleadings for judicial or quasi-judicial proceedings - Conduct or assist with legal research and prepare formal legal opinions on complex matters MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Doctor of Jurisprudence degree or Bachelor of Laws degree - Three (3) years of experience as an attorney at law - No substitution of experience for education is permitted SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Possession of a license to practice law in Colorado from the Colorado Supreme Court by the date of hire, or a reasonable expectation of becoming licensed by the date of hire in accordance with C.R.C.P. 203.2, 203.3, 203.4, and 205.6 - Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment - Must have valid work authorization that does not require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the U.S. - Hybrid workplace model: employees work where needed, at a job site several days a week, and off-site within the state of Colorado as needed - Ideal candidate has at least seven (7) years of employment and/or labor law experience, including substantial experience with Federal and State Labor Laws, Title VII, FMLA, ADA, ADEA, FLSA, and public sector, traditional labor, or civil litigation experience SELECTION PROCESS - Applications will be evaluated based on education, experience, and alignment with the required competencies - The City and County of Denver provides equal employment opportunities without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, genetic information, age, or any other status protected under federal, state, and/or local law HOW TO APPLY - Submit an application through the City and County of Denver's official employment portal as soon as possible and no later than August 9, 2026, at 11:59 PM EMPLOYMENT DETAILS - Location: Downtown Denver (Hybrid; must work within the state of Colorado on off-site days) - Time Type: Full time - Job Requisition ID: R0080627 - Job Profile: CL0357 Assistant City Attorney Senior - Position Type: Unlimited - Agency: City Attorney's Office - Application End Date: August 9, 2026, at 11:59 PM
