About This Position
ABOUT THE ROLE
The City of Baltimore seeks a proactive and detail-oriented Systems Engineer specializing in Server Administration to ensure the security, stability, and optimal performance of the core IT infrastructure. This role involves day-to-day management of server environments, routine maintenance, infrastructure application support, vulnerability patching, enterprise backup and storage operations, and maintaining critical virtual server environments like IIS.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage day-to-day server environments and perform routine server maintenance.
- Provide infrastructure application support and comprehensive vulnerability patching.
- Oversee enterprise backup and storage operations to ensure data integrity and business continuity.
- Host, configure, and maintain critical virtual server environments, including IIS and business-specific services.
- Install, repair, and troubleshoot network programs, hardware, and systems.
- Develop database queries, generate reports, and write detailed technical reports and analyses.
- Schedule and perform preventative and corrective maintenance procedures.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with vendors, management, technical co-workers, and system users.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in science from an accredited college or university.
- Four years of related specialty IT experience (e.g., system engineering, network engineering, information security, application programming, systems design, database management, GIS, custom report writing, or cloud-based software integration).
- OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of installation, maintenance, and enhancement of microcomputer systems and mainframe client servers.
- Knowledge of systems analysis, computer programming, and IT operations interrelationships.
- Skill in developing database queries, generating reports, and designing complex systems.
- Preferred: Advanced technical credentials such as Project Management Professional (PMP) or Certified Information Security Manager (CISM).
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must successfully complete a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint check.
- Must complete a mandatory six-month probation period.
- Education credentials obtained outside the US must be evaluated for US equivalency (e.g., via www.naces.org).
- Must complete a Financial Disclosure within 30 days of hire, pursuant to the City Ethics Law.
SELECTION PROCESS
- Candidates indicating minimum qualifications on their applications will be placed on the eligible list without further examination.
- Training and experience will be evaluated for appropriateness and quantity based on the application.
- Applicants may be required to complete supplemental questions to examine specific Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities.
- Successful applicants will be placed on the employment certified eligible list for at least six months (candidates are not listed in rank order).
- Final consideration requires authorization for the release of criminal conviction information.
