About This Position
ABOUT THE ROLE
Performs a wide variety of tasks in support of law enforcement and crime prevention functions. Duties include investigative work, special assignments, and technical and administrative tasks to support the Police Department. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Police Sergeant.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prepare reports on crimes and activities; attend roll call, briefings, and administrative meetings.
- Participate in firearms and law enforcement equipment training to maintain proficiency.
- Use departmental computer equipment to input, review, and gain records and data.
- Make arrests, execute search warrants, issue citations, and appear in court.
- Patrol business and residential areas, enforce traffic laws, and respond to alarms and accidents.
- Operate Mobile Data Computer (MDC), speed detection devices, and other police equipment.
- Respond to emergency calls, secure crime scenes, preserve evidence, and interview witnesses or suspects.
- Mediate civil and domestic disputes and confiscate illegal or stolen property.
- Assist with emergency medical situations, fires, and other disasters.
- May participate in tactical, undercover, or intelligence-gathering operations, administer polygraph tests, or process fingerprint cards.
- Educate the public and students on crime prevention and interact with school administrators.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be at least 21 years of age by the Academy start date (February 8, 2027) or for lateral candidates.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Must meet one of the following education or experience requirements:
1. 30 hours of college credit from an accredited college or university (no remedial courses, grade of C or better).
2. Minimum of 2 years of patrol and/or investigative experience as a full-time commissioned police officer.
3. Minimum of 2 years of active military duty with an honorable discharge.
4. Minimum of 18 months of full-time employment with the City of Mesquite.
- Vision must be at least 20/70 uncorrected, correctable to 20/20, with no color blindness.
- Hearing loss must not exceed 40 decibels at 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, and 2000 Hz in the unaided better ear.
- Must be mentally alert, dependable, and in excellent physical condition.
- Must pass a qualifying physical ability and medical examination, including drug testing.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Valid Class C Texas driver's license.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, certification as a Peace Officer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
- Legal qualification to possess firearms and ammunition under U.S. and Texas law.
- Disqualifiers include: any felony conviction; illegal use of controlled substances other than marijuana and cocaine; cocaine use or possession within 10 years of application or more than three times; marijuana use exceeding very limited experimentation or within two years prior to testing.
SELECTION PROCESS
1. Online application submission with supplemental questions.
2. Police Personal History Questionnaire Packet (MPD-PHS) due on the exam date.
3. Civil Service Written Exam on Saturday, August 22, 2026 (Check-in at 8:30 AM, Exam start at 9:00 AM).
4. Physical Agility Test (PAT) on Saturday, August 22, 2026, for candidates scoring 70 or above on the written exam.
5. Submission of official college transcripts in a sealed envelope (if applicable).
6. Submission of DD214 member 4 copy for military applicants (eligible for 5 extra points with a passing grade).
HOW TO APPLY
