Police Officer Trainee

ABOUT THE ROLE The City of Glendora is seeking motivated individuals with high ethical standards to start their career as a police officer. This recruitment is for those who have not been through an academy program. The Police Officer Trainee participates in a POST-certified Basic Law Enforcement Training Program in a non-sworn capacity. During training, trainees report directly to the academy, do not have police powers, and may be assigned non-safety duties. The assignment is contingent upon successful completion of the academy and Police Chief review. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Successfully attend and graduate from a P.O.S.T. certified basic academy - Learn the use and care of firearms and related equipment - Think clearly and act quickly in emergencies, judging situations and people accurately - Learn, understand, and interpret laws and regulations - Prepare accurate and grammatically correct written reports - Understand, explain, and apply policies and procedures - Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing - Make clear and concise radio transmissions - Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships - Meet established physical requirements and California State Government Code standards for Police Officers - Perform other related duties as assigned MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - High school graduate or equivalent (Required) - Any combination of education and/or experience providing necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities, such as: 1. Two (2) years of experience in civilian law enforcement, OR 2. Military experience, OR 3. Completion of an AA/AS degree or equivalent units from an accredited College or University, or some combination thereof - Working knowledge of modern law enforcement practices, patrol, investigation, public relations, report writing, Vehicle and Penal Codes, laws of arrest, rules of evidence, legal rights of citizens, and court procedures SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of academy graduation - U.S. citizen or eligible for U.S. citizenship (must diligently cooperate in processing within three years) - Possession of or ability to obtain a Class C California driver's license with a satisfactory driving record - Meet standards of physical stature, endurance, and agility established by the City - Primary residence must be within 65 miles or less of the Glendora Police facility building (for officers obtaining sworn status on or after September 23, 1996) - Written exam waived if applicant provides a POST PELLET B "T-Score" of 45 or higher (dated within the last 12 months) or a passing National Testing Network score transferred to the City SELECTION PROCESS 1. Application review and evaluation to determine best-qualified candidates 2. Qualifying written or performance evaluation (may be waived with valid POST PELLET B or NTN scores) 3. Interview weighted 100% 4. Conditional Offer of Employment followed by an extensive law enforcement background investigation, polygraph, and administrative review 5. Pre-employment physical examination by a City physician and drug screen test (urinalysis) 6.
