About This Position

ABOUT THE ROLE Under supervision, the Entry Level Firefighter (Paramedic) responds to fire alarms, rescue, and other emergency calls to protect life and property. This role involves assisting in daily fire prevention inspections, participating in training and drills, maintaining fire stations and equipment, and performing related duties. The position reports to a Company Fire Captain or Battalion Chief and is assigned to companies, stations, and platoons. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Respond to alarms, lay hose, fight fires under departmental procedures, ventilate buildings, and direct streams of water. - Rescue endangered persons and administer first aid. - Operate fire trucks, resuscitators, and other apparatus. - Assist in simple maintenance, upkeep, and repairs to fire department apparatus and equipment. - Inspect commercial and residential structures to ensure compliance with fire prevention laws, codes, and regulations. - Maintain fire stations and grounds, attend drills and classes, and study applicable technical publications. - Make necessary written and oral reports and maintain simple records. - Periodically perform in acting positions above classification and assist in public relations or educational activities for fire prevention. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Graduation from High School or completion of G.E.D. (preferably supplemented by course work in Fire Science). - Graduation from a California State Fire Marshal Accredited Fire Academy or possession of a California State Fire Marshal Accredited Firefighter I certificate (or IFSAC/Pro-Board equivalent with HazMat Awareness/FRO). - Knowledge of elementary mathematics, physics, chemistry, mechanics, first aid techniques, and fire fighting codes and regulations. - Ability to read technical manuals, follow directions under stress, work effectively in hazardous situations, and communicate courteously with the public. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Valid Class C California driver's license and proof of insurability. - Current and valid Paramedic license. - ACLS certification. - Current and valid CPR certification (Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider). - CPAT or Biddle physical ability test certification (must be obtained within the last 24 months). - Ability to lift, drag, and pull heavy objects up to 150 pounds and work outdoors in all weather conditions. SELECTION PROCESS 1. Application screening based on experience, training, and education. 2. Written examination (multiple choice, pass/fail, 70% required, sourced from IFSTA Essentials of Fire Fighting 7th Edition). 3. Structured oral interview (50% of total score) and paramedic assessment (50% of total score), requiring 70% or higher on each section. 4. Placement on an eligibility list. 5. Fire Chief's oral interview. 6. Final appointment by the City Manager upon the Fire Chief's recommendation. 7. Thorough background investigation and pre-employment physical, including drug screening.
