About This Position
ABOUT THE ROLE
The University Police Communications and Security Specialist 1 (CSS 1) provides critical communications services for the New York State University Police at Albany. Functioning as a desk officer, dispatcher, and 911 operator, the CSS is typically the first representative of the Department to assist those seeking help. This multi-faceted role requires operating various communication and security systems, dispatching patrols, maintaining records, and occasionally patrolling campus facilities to enforce regulations and assist the campus community.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Answer telephone, radio, and computer communications lines.
- Dispatch mobile and foot patrols.
- Maintain appropriate records, and prepare and file a variety of reports and logs.
- Operate radio receiver and broadcast equipment, telephone equipment, the eJusticeNY Integrated Justice Portal, personal computers, closed-circuit television systems, and electronic security systems.
- Patrol campus buildings and facilities, enforce building regulations, maintain order, and answer questions for students, staff, and visitors.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Non-Competitive (NY HELPS): One year of full-time experience as a Police or Peace Officer; OR one year of full-time experience as a dispatcher for a public safety agency (fire departments, emergency medical services, or law enforcement); OR one year of active service and an Honorable Discharge from the United States military as a dispatcher or military police/security personnel.
- Substitution: 30 semester college credit hours from an accredited school.
- Competitive: Reachable score on the University Police Communications & Security Specialist 1 List; OR current NYS employee with 1 year of service in an eligible title; OR former NYS employee eligible for reinstatement; OR filled from a mandatory reemployment list.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- May require additional credentials or a background check to verify identity.
- Must be available to work variable shifts, as determined by seniority bid (training is expected on day shifts).
SELECTION PROCESS
- Filled via a non-competitive appointment under the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS), meaning no examination is initially required.
- Within one year of permanent appointment, non-competitive status is expected to convert to competitive status without an examination.
- Resumes that do not clearly meet the minimum requirements will be deemed unqualified.
