About This Position
ABOUT THE ROLE
Under general supervision, this role answers emergency (911) and non-emergency phone lines, maintains contact with law enforcement personnel and other City units in the field, and dispatches appropriate units or equipment in response to calls received through the Burbank Police Department Communications Center.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serve as an Operator in the Communications Center on a shift basis
- Receive calls, dispatch, and record appropriate law enforcement and other equipment to respond to reported emergencies
- Maintain contact with units at all times during shift assignments to send needed or requested assistance
- Maintain a continuous record of the status of mobile units indicating the disposition of each unit
- Operate the emergency (911) telephone system and computer terminals to enter, modify, or retrieve data
- Send and receive computer messages and route them to appropriate destinations
- Maintain a current log of all information received and transmitted
- Prepare required reports and summaries of Communications Center activities
- Perform miscellaneous clerical work, including composing and typing log sheets
- May drive on City business as required
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school graduation or equivalent
- One year of recent full-time experience in customer service, clerical work, or emergency services dispatch/radio communications work
- Ability to type 40 net words per minute
- Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified Public Safety Dispatch Basic Course Certificate within one year of appointment
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Valid California Class C driver's license or equivalent may be required at the time of appointment
- All required licenses and certificates must be maintained throughout employment
- Must be able to work rotating shifts
- Any candidate who withdraws, fails to appear, or fails at any part of the testing process will be subject to a 90-day waiting period for re-application
