About This Position
ABOUT THE ROLE
The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) Police Department is seeking highly skilled, calm-under-pressure, and service-oriented individuals to join as Police Dispatchers. Working in a fast-paced, 24/7 public safety communications center, the incumbent will receive and prioritize incoming 911 emergency and non-emergency calls, operate radio systems, and dispatch patrol units to crime scenes, service calls, and transit-system emergencies.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Receives and prioritizes incoming 911 emergency and non-emergency telephone calls
- Operates radio to dispatch patrol units and other police personnel to crime scenes and transit system emergencies
- Operates computer terminals to access a variety of police information and databases
- Provides radio assistance and critical information to Police Officers
- Coordinates emergency response with other law enforcement agencies and emergency services
- Maintains service records and logs computerized information
- Coordinates activities with central control for emergency train intercepts, power turn-offs, and other revenue vehicle system emergencies
- Provides police-related telephone information to District patrons and answers inquiries from other law enforcement agencies
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma, GED, or recognized equivalent
- One (1) year (full-time equivalent) verifiable experience in a position requiring extensive public contact, communication skills, and effective interpersonal relationships
- Ability to type at 40 net words per minute with no more than ten (10) errors
- Ability to move quickly between workstations and perform multiple duties simultaneously
- Knowledge of basic law enforcement terminology, rules, procedures, and dispatch policies
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must successfully pass a detailed background investigation prior to appointment
- Must be able to work various shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime
- Lateral applicants must possess at least one (1) year of dispatcher experience and be currently or previously employed as a dispatcher with a POST-certified agency
- Typing certificates must be within the last six (6) months from a recognized college, public school, career center, or temporary employment agency, showing a 5-minute timed test with gross and net WPM and no more than 10 errors
SELECTION PROCESS
Entry-Level Police Dispatcher (6 phases):
1. Pre-Screening Application Questionnaire
2. Minimum Qualifications screening
3. POST Entry-Level Dispatcher Selection Test Battery written examination (tentatively August 2026; waivers available for recent valid POST T-Score of 48+, passing CritiCall scores, or valid POST Dispatcher Certificate)
4. Typing Test or typing certificate submission
5. Oral Board Interview
6. Background investigation (may include polygraph, psychological screening, credit check, and pre-employment medical examination)
Lateral Police Dispatcher (4 phases):
1. Pre-Screening Background Questionnaire
2. Minimum Qualifications screening (typing test or certificate may be required)
3. Oral Board Interview
4. Background investigation (may include polygraph and psychological evaluation)
