About This Position
ABOUT THE ROLE
This is the entry-level law enforcement position for Alameda County, existing solely for those attending the Sheriff's Office Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certified Basic Academy. Recruits receive intensive academic instruction in law enforcement combined with rigorous physical fitness training. Upon successful completion of the Academy, recruits are sworn in as Peace Officers and promoted to Deputy Sheriff I.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Attend and complete the P.O.S.T. Certified Basic Academy
- Receive intensive academic instruction in law enforcement principles and procedures
- Participate in rigorous physical fitness training
- Prepare for promotion to Deputy Sheriff I and sworn Peace Officer duties, including patrol, investigations, and emergency response
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school graduation or possession of an acceptable equivalency certificate (e.g., GED)
- Valid California State Motor Vehicle Operator's License by the time of appointment to Deputy Sheriff I
- At least 21 years of age at the time of appointment to Deputy Sheriff I
- Legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law (U.S. citizenship is not strictly required per SB 960)
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must pass a thorough background investigation and psychological examination
- No record of any felony conviction (results in automatic disqualification)
- Normal hearing in each ear
- Far vision of at least 20/100 without glasses, correctable to 20/20 with glasses; must be free from color blindness and permanent abnormality in either eye
- Must be in excellent physical condition with above-average strength, endurance, and agility, meeting California POST-approved safety member physical standards
SELECTION PROCESS
1. Review of applications and supplemental questionnaires to verify possession of minimum requirements
2. POST Entry Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB) with a passing score of 42, OR National Testing Network (NTN) Frontline Test (passing scores: 60% Video, 85% Reading, 80% Writing). Scores must be dated no more than one year ago.
3. Physical Abilities Test (PAT) with a passing score of 220 (if taken with Alameda County Sheriff's Office) or 320 (if taken with an outside agency). Scores are valid for one year.
4. Oral Examination (weighted as 100% of the applicant's final examination score)
5. Thorough background investigation and psychological examination
HOW TO APPLY
- Submit an application and a properly completed Supplemental Questionnaire online via the County's online application system by 5:00 p.m. on the filing deadline
- Upload valid PELLETB or NTN scores and PAT scores under the "resume" tab, or email them to the recruitment analyst at elaine.lemi@acgov.org
- Do not submit duplicate applications; contact the analyst to have a previous application released if reapplying
- Veterans claiming preference must present proof of honorable discharge (DD214) during check-in on the date of the scheduled oral interview
