About This Position
ABOUT THE ROLE
This is a trainee position for protective service work within the Mesa Police Department. Recruits attend the Mesa Police Department Academy to learn the responsibilities of an entry-level Arizona peace officer, followed by the Field Officer Training Program. Upon successful completion of academy instruction and field training, the incumbent is promoted to the class of Police Officer and performs law enforcement patrol activities in a designated area of the City.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Interact with a culturally and socially diverse population.
- Employ discretion in solving problems and maintaining public order.
- Prevent crime, enforce laws and ordinances, and conduct investigations.
- Make arrests, issue summonses, citations, and warnings, and assist the public.
- Perform law enforcement patrol activities in a designated area of the City.
- Take action without direct supervision and exercise independent judgment during emergencies.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school graduation or GED.
- At least 21 years of age by graduation from the Police Academy.
- United States citizenship.
- Valid Class D Arizona Driver's License by hire or promotion date.
- Vision meeting Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST) requirements (e.g., uncorrected 20/80 or better correctable to 20/20 with glasses or hard contacts, or uncorrected 20/200 correctable to 20/20 with soft contacts).
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must successfully complete a background investigation and polygraph.
- Must meet qualifications to wear a tight-fitting respirator by passing a medical evaluation in accordance with CFR 1910.134.
- Must pass a pre-employment medical physical, psychological test battery, and drug screening.
- Subject to pre-employment/pre-placement and random alcohol, drug, and/or controlled substance testing.
- Preferred qualification: Completion of college-level courses in criminal justice.
SELECTION PROCESS
1. Written Exercise through the National Testing Network (NTN).
2. Cooper's Test fitness evaluation (minimum 20 push-ups in one minute, minimum 30 sit-ups in one minute, 1.5-mile run in 15 minutes maximum).
3. Background investigation and polygraph examination.
4. Pre-employment medical physical, psychological test battery, and drug screening.
