About This Position
ABOUT THE ROLE
This position is located at the Lexington VA Health Care System in Lexington, Kentucky. The incumbent serves as a Resource Pool Registered Nurse, responsible for providing and supervising direct patient care across various units. The role requires strong leadership, innovative problem-solving skills, and the ability to manage complex care in diverse settings including Emergency, Critical Care, Progressive Care, Mental Health, Medical/Surgical, Community Living Centers, and Post Anesthesia Care. This is a permanent, full-time position in the Excepted Service.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care based on age-specific components.
- Coordinate care with a focus on patient education, self-management, and customer satisfaction.
- Administer medications and procedures according to established policies and guidelines.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to influence care outcomes.
- Demonstrate leadership and creative approaches to managing complex client care.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen.
Education: Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by ACEN or CCNE. Foreign graduates must have a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration and may require formal degree equivalency validation for degrees higher than associate/entry level.
Grade Determinations (Scope and Education):
Nurse I, Level I: ADN or Diploma in Nursing. Delivers fundamental care while developing technical competencies.
Nurse I, Level II: ADN/Diploma plus 1 year specialized experience OR BSN with no additional experience. Demonstrates integration of biopsychosocial concepts and competent practice.
Nurse I, Level III: ADN/Diploma plus 2 years experience (1 at Level II) OR BSN plus 1 year experience (at Level II) OR MSN with no additional experience. Demonstrates proficiency and self-directed goal setting for complex situations.
Nurse II: BSN plus 2 years experience (1 at Level III) OR MSN plus 1 year experience (at Level III) OR Doctoral degree in Nursing/Related Field with BSN. Demonstrates leadership in delivering holistic care through collaboration.
Nurse III: MSN plus 2 years specialized experience (1 at Nurse II) OR Doctoral degree in Nursing plus 1 year experience (at Nurse II). Executes responsibilities demonstrating leadership and creative management of complex care beyond the immediate practice setting.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Subject to urinalysis for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
- Selective Service Registration required for males born after 12/31/1959.
- Must pass pre-employment physical examination and background/security investigation.
- Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is mandatory for all Health Care Personnel.
- May be required to serve a probationary period.
- Telework is not available; this is not a virtual position.

EMPLOYMENT DETAILS
- Work Schedule: Days/Nights 12 hours with rotation to other shifts as needed.
- Paid Time Off: 50 days annually (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 Federal holidays).
