ABOUT THE ROLE The Department of the Air Force, Air Force Materiel Command, is seeking Firefighters assigned to a crew engaged in structural firefighting, rescue, and Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) Technician duties. The primary purpose is to respond to the presence or potential releases of hazardous materials to stop or control the release. This is a Mission-Essential position performing a Mission-Critical Function. Employees work a 72-hour week on a 24-hour on/24-hour off basis, including weekends and holidays. The role involves working under adverse environmental conditions and requires adherence to respiratory protection and hearing conservation programs. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Perform hazard and risk assessments and complete incident analyses. - Perform structural firefighting duties for various facilities, including multistoried buildings, industrial areas, and storage facilities. - Perform rescue of personnel and provide first aid measures to alleviate injury and prepare victims for transport. - Control or extinguish fires as part of an organized fire department. - Detect, reduce, or eliminate potential fire hazards. - Control hazardous materials incidents and perform mitigation actions. - Maintain firefighting equipment and fire station facilities. - Operate fire communications equipment and complex firefighting vehicles. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level, including: 1. Controlling or extinguishing fires in an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department. 2. Rescue operations. 3. Detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards. 4. Operation of fire communications equipment. 5. Controlling hazardous materials incidents. 6. Developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention. - Time-in-Grade: Merit promotion applicants must have one year at the GS-06 level. CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED At time of appointment, the incumbent must possess: - DoD Firefighter Certification System, IFSAC, or Pro Board Accredited Certification as: - Firefighter I - Firefighter II - Hazardous Materials Awareness - Hazardous Materials Operations - Hazardous Materials Technician - National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) certification as an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR). (EMT certification is highly preferred). SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Maximum Entry Age: Must not have reached 37th birthday at time of original appointment, unless previously served in a Federal civilian firefighting position or is a qualified veteran preference eligible. - Citizenship: U.S. Citizen required. - Selective Service: Males born after December 31, 1959, must be registered. - Driver’s License: Valid driver’s license required. - Physical Fitness: Must participate in a mandatory physical fitness program and pass a pre-employment physical. - Security Clearance: Must obtain and maintain appropriate security clearance. - Drug Testing: Subject to drug testing upon selection and randomly thereafter. - Work Schedule: 24-hour on/24-hour off rotation (72 hours/week). Mission-Essential status requires reporting during emergencies.
