About This Position

ABOUT THE ROLE The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is seeking sworn Police Officers to maintain order, enforce laws and ordinances, and protect life and property within the City of Los Angeles. Officers work with neighborhood associations and community members as planners, community organizers, problem solvers, and information links. Responsibilities include issuing citations, making arrests, preparing reports, and providing information to the public and departmental units. This is a full-time position with an opening date of June 26, 2026, and a continuous closing date. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Maintain order and enforce laws and ordinances - Protect life and property - Work with neighborhood associations and community members as a planner, community organizer, and problem solver - Issue citations and make arrests - Prepare detailed reports - Provide information to the public and departmental units - Perform related duties as assigned MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - At least 20 years of age at the time of application and 21 years of age by police academy graduation - Graduation from a U.S. high school, G.E.D., equivalent from a U.S. institution, or California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE) certificate. A two or four-year college degree from an accredited U.S. or foreign institution may substitute for high school requirements. - Legal authorization to work in the United States under federal law - Valid Class C driver’s license issued by the California DMV at the time of appointment (DMV record must not reflect three or more moving violations/at-fault accidents or a major moving violation conviction within the last 36 months) - Must meet all standards set forth by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (CA POST) - Must comply with LAPD grooming and appearance policies, including those related to tattoos and brandings PREFERRED SKILLS - Strong judgment and decision-making abilities - Excellent written and oral communication skills - Ability to perform physically demanding tasks under stressful conditions - Cultural sensitivity and community-oriented policing practices - Stress tolerance and initiative - Interpersonal skills and ability to interact respectfully with diverse backgrounds SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Completion of Entry-level Peace Officer Supplemental Questionnaire at the time of filing - Attachment of qualifying U.S. high school diploma/transcripts or foreign credential evaluation report (NACES or AICE member) at the time of filing - Drug and alcohol screening test required prior to appointment and during employment - Background investigation including fingerprinting, personal history statement, and polygraph examination - Medical and psychological evaluations required - Vision requirements: Uncorrected distance vision not exceeding 20/70 in either eye, best eye at least 20/40; corrected vision to at least 20/30 in each eye - Body fat content must be appropriate for height and build - No felony convictions; no misdemeanor domestic violence convictions - Candidates decertified by CA POST or ineligible under California Government Code section 1029 are disqualified SELECTION PROCESS - Qualifying Multiple-Choice Test (Judgment, Decision Making, Written Communication) - Qualifying Physical Abilities Test (PAT): Sit-ups, 300-meter sprint, push-ups, 1.5-mile run - Interview (100% weight for eligible list ranking): Evaluates experience, judgment, initiative, stress tolerance, job interest, interpersonal skills, community relations, and oral communication - Background Investigation - Medical and Psychological Evaluation - Academy Training: Six-month, 40-hour per week program with full pay - Probationary Period: 18 months following academy completion HOW TO APPLY - Complete two separate online applications: 1.
