ABOUT THE ROLE The City and County of Denver City Attorney’s Office is hiring an unlimited Entry Assistant City Attorney for the Prosecution and Code Enforcement (PACE) Section. This role involves prosecuting a variety of ordinance violations, including municipal crimes, traffic offenses, domestic violence, assault, shoplifting, and trespassing. The position also handles civil nuisance abatement cases, licensing violations, and mental health or drug/alcohol commitments. The PACE section utilizes state-of-the-art technology and includes a Neighborhood Prosecution Team focused on dispute resolution and diverting cases from traditional criminal proceedings. The selected candidate will work collaboratively with paralegals and victim advocates to ensure victim-centric case preparation and provide legal advice to City agencies. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Evaluate and prepare cases for all stages of criminal prosecution under supervisor direction. - Work collaboratively with paralegals and victim advocates to ensure proper case preparation. - Draft appropriate motions and respond to motions in a professional and timely manner. - Draft and respond to appeals. - Provide legal advice to City agencies and represent them during administrative hearings. - Interpret policy, ordinances, and charter requirements. - Assist other attorneys in specialized areas with research and related activities. - Provide agencies with formal legal opinions. - Draft proposed ordinances. - Help crime victims navigate the criminal justice system and understand their rights. - Manage mental health and drug and alcohol commitments. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Education: Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree or Bachelor of Law Degree. - Experience: None required. - Note: No substitution of experience for education is permitted. - License/Certifications: Possession of a license to practice law in Colorado from the Colorado Supreme Court by the date of hire, OR a reasonable expectation of becoming licensed by the date of hire in accordance with C.R.C.P. 203.2, 203.3, 203.4, and 205.6. Licenses must be kept current as a condition of employment. PREFERRED SKILLS - Significant experience handling criminal matters. - Substantial experience in all phases of criminal litigation. - Strong oral and written communication skills. - History of success in a fast-paced, demanding criminal litigation practice. - Experience with domestic violence cases or victims. - Willingness to work in a paperless environment. - Commitment to working collaboratively with a team. - Understanding of municipal government law. - Strong commitment to public service and courtroom experience. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Must have valid work authorization that does not require sponsorship of a visa for employment in the U.S. - May be re-deployed to support core city functions during a citywide emergency. - Work locations include Wellington E. Webb Municipal Office Building, City and County Building, Lindsey Flanigan Courthouse, and Downtown Detention Center. - Office hours are generally 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, but may be longer depending on court and case needs.
