About This Position
ABOUT THE ROLE
- Agency: City of Wichita Department of Law
- Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with additional time required depending on caseload
- Bargaining Unit: Employee Council
- Overview: Engages in professional legal work to prosecute a wide range of cases in Wichita Municipal Court, including traffic violations, criminal charges, domestic violence, and environmental or housing offenses. May occasionally handle appeals to District Court.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop and prosecute police and traffic cases.
- Interview complainants and witnesses, determine facts relative to prosecution, and issue complaints.
- Confer with and advise Police Officers and City officials on the legal interpretation of City ordinances.
- Represent the City in prosecuting building, health, and zoning ordinance violations.
- Prepare trial dockets and try misdemeanor bench trials.
- Operate a vehicle as needed to complete work assignments.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduation from an accredited school of law.
- Currently licensed to practice law in the State of Kansas, or have completed the July 2026 Kansas Bar Examination and be awaiting results.
- Working knowledge of the principles of criminal law, municipal laws, and municipal court methods and procedures.
- Ability to appear in-person for municipal court proceedings according to assigned dockets.
- Ability to perform self-directed research, apply legal principles, and communicate clearly orally and in writing.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, other departments, and the public.
- May require the ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship.
- Offers of employment are contingent upon obtaining a temporary permit to practice law in Kansas and successfully passing the Kansas Bar Examination if currently awaiting results.
- Must pass a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening.
- Must pass a satisfactory criminal record check.
- Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
