About This Position
ABOUT THE ROLE
Under the direction of the Director of Libraries, the Assistant Director is accountable for the effective delivery of public library services to the citizens of Austin. This role ensures the efficient management, operation, and strategic alignment of all Public Services Divisions, including Central Library Services, Branch Library Services, Cataloging and Collection Management, the Office of Programs and Partnerships, and the Austin History Center. The position oversees more than 250 staff and 24 library facilities, serving over 1 million Austinites.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Define and communicate strategic vision for delivering library services to the community
- Direct day-to-day operations of the Library's Public Services Divisions and supervise division managers
- Ensure staff follows policies to select and maintain balanced library collections reflective of community needs
- Ensure high-quality and engaging programs are developed for customers of all ages
- Ensure library staff participate in outreach opportunities to bring information to the community
- Support the Austin History Center in its mission to preserve the history of the City of Austin
- Ensure all activities comply with City of Austin and departmental policies and applicable laws
- Coordinate with other City departments to avoid duplication of programs
- Serve as the Executive Liaison to the Library Commission
- Represent the Library to government, external agencies, regulatory bodies, and the public
- Perform full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, and counseling
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. Master's degree from an American Library Association accredited college or university.
2. Six years of progressively responsible experience in the library field.
3. Four years of experience in an upper management capacity.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Experience leading public-facing operations within a large, multi-branch urban library system
- Experience developing strategic initiatives related to community engagement, digital equity, or intellectual freedom
- Demonstrated ability to build collaborative partnerships with community organizations, nonprofits, and government stakeholders
- Experience presenting to executive leadership, governing bodies, boards, or community groups
- Demonstrated success leading organizational change initiatives or service delivery improvements
- Strong commitment to digital equity, civil discourse, intellectual freedom, and equitable access
- Ability to navigate sensitive public issues with professionalism and diplomacy
